Then and Now

It’s just been a few short months, but the gains in writing have come in leaps and bounds.

Check out what my students did back then in September - and boy, what they can do now.

Then: Me and my mom went to the park.  (Pretty good for the start of the year.)

Now: I’m going to the mountain with my mom and my little brother for my skiing lessons… (Same child!  Those are perfectly spelled high frequency words, I might add. And I think I want that ski suit.)

Then: I went to the mall.  I saw lots of things.  (Girl of my heart.)

Now:  There was a little baby reindeer who did not have his antlers yet… (If her ideas could explode off the page, they would.)

Then:  Capital letters and a squishy train of letters.

Now:  Hello, periods and spaces.  (Love how he spells “costume”.)

First grade is awesome.  Term one – check.

Hi! I just found your blog and noticed you are a 1st grade teacher, of course. How I found your blog was through searching how-to teach children to write and read. I am trying to teach my 4 1/2 yo daughter; we’ve just started but it seems so hard right now. She seems to remember a lot though, so I know it can be done at this age. Any tips for me? It’d be great if you could post something about it or just refer me to some link. Thanks a lot! Have a great weekend.
