It’s Showtime
Welcome to Pancakes for Recess! I’m thrilled to open up my classroom doors and finally launch my blog about little ones and their learning in first grade.
With the start of school still about a week away, I figure a good place to start is with myself. Here’s a picture of me in my preschool production of 1, 2, 3… 6 Little Monkeys. (I’m not sure what happened to the other 4, but clearly that makeshift stage has ‘hazard’ written aaaallll over it.) I’m the rather animated gal in the green skirt and batwing blousy thing made proudly by my mom. This performance is one of my earliest memories of school and the look on my face says it all – I just loved it.
Over the span of my many years in school, I was a pretty darn good student. I was the one who sat in the front row, who returned my library books before they were due, who longed for September as soon as school was out and who wished I didn’t have perfect eyesight because glasses surely would make me look smarter.
After years of lessons, spring breaks, conferences, bells, assemblies, recesses, report cards and completing my own graduate and postgraduate studies – I can say this with the utmost confidence: school is what I know best.
Obviously a lot has changed since this picture – I may not be in a rush for summer to end anymore but I still do think there’s nothing quite like a sharp pencil, a fresh page and the promise of a really great story each time you open a book.
Oh and I actually do have glasses now. But it’s the kids who are the smart ones. You’ll see.
Come on in and visit often – my daily experiences at school are just too good to keep to myself.

Brings back the thrill of my first days as a teacher… LOVE the smell of crayons in August!
You can see you were a good student from the start – you are definitely the most engaged of the monkeys,,,, you are facing the right way and not laying on the ground,,, yet! Such a great pic – thank goodness for mom and dad to immortalize these moments.
Excited to see all the happening in Ms. S’s class. Great work on the header!
ps- i like my pancakes with blueberries and good ol’ aunt jemimas!
